Bathroom PaintThis basic form of wall covering can be used in bathrooms but can suffer adversely from humidity and contact with water. If moisture gets behind painted surfaces the paint will blister and eventually peel off, while moisture on the surface can create mould. Extractor fans can reduce damage from condensation and moisture. It is best to use paint in conjunction with a more waterproof wall covering such as tiles or bathroom cladding - especially in wet areas of the bathroom such as shower areas and around the bath. Bathrooms walls have to be flat and smooth before applying paint as any imperfections will shown through the painted surface.
There are some paints available specifically designed for use in bathrooms (and kitchens) which are designed to inhibit mould growth. The moisture present in bathrooms and shower rooms can weaken most standard emulsions so many of the leading paint manufacturers make specially formulated paint that can withstand these conditions without flaking or blistering. It is still vital to ensure that the surface is dry before applying to ensure that the paint can adhere properly to the wall or ceiling. |
