Bath End Tiles

Baths have been made to standard size for many years. Other sizes are available (and becoming more popular) but the problem with most UK bathrooms is that were designed with the standard 5'6" / 1700mm bath in mind. Occasionally they are built slightly larger which can then cause a problem if you try to fit a standard size bath into the gap.

The following image shows such a situation where the walls are around 4" further apart than the length of a standard bath and so a tiled horizontal area has been used to bridge the gap. Tiles fitted in these situations are notoriously difficult to maintain as any flexing in the bath causes the grout to crack and can also force the adhesive to part company with the tile. This is bad enough if the bath is used purely for bathing but if it is also used for showering the problem can be exacerbated.

If a shower were to be installed at the tap end of the above bath the best course of action would be to either move the bath up until it meets the wall (moving the tiled area to the opposite end, away from the shower) or build the wall out slightly to meet the bath (which could be handy for concealing the pipework for the shower). Eliminating the horizontal tiled area is always recommended as these hardly ever work in the long term and nearly always result in leaks and water damage.
